Vocational Education Partnerships

For 18 years, the HBAWS has been deeply involved in two education programs that work to build homes in Forsyth County with Habitat for Humanity. These programs take place at the WS/FCS Career Center and Forsyth Technical Community College. This is done through the Vocational Education Fund, a monetary support program that was started to support secondary and post-secondary training in the home-building industry. “Both the Career Center and Forsyth Tech provide valuable instruction to support the home-building industry,” said Sylvia Oberle, executive director of Habitat for Humanity in Forsyth County.

WSFCS Career Center Habitat Project

The HBAWS was the first business partner of a secondary education program in the state of North Carolina. "Learn by doing" has always been a tried and true technique in Vocational Education. This is a win/win for our community as the HBAWS supports the Career Center and Forsyth Technical Community College in their efforts to train and educate future professionals in the housing industry.

FTCC Habitat Project

The Carpentry curriculum is designed to train students to construct residential structures using standard building materials and hand and power tools. Carpentry skills and a general knowledge of residential construction will also be taught.

Course work includes footings and foundations, framing, interior and exterior trim, cabinetry, blueprint reading, residential planning and estimating, and other related topics. Students will develop skills through hands-on participation. Graduates should qualify for employment in the residential building construction field as rough carpenters, framing carpenters, roofers, maintenance carpenters, and other related job titles.

Charitable Contributions

The HBAWS Charitable Contributions Committee raises charitable funds annually to support Vocational Education / Habitat for Humanity. The first $25,000 raised by the Association is earmarked for the *Jimmy Johnson Memorial - Vocational Education Fund.

The Vocational Education Fund covers the hard costs of constructing Habitat houses built by vocational education students, one house by the WSFCS Career Center and one house by Forsyth Technical Community College.

Home Builders Association of W-S was the first business partner of a secondary education program in the state of North Carolina. "Learn by doing" has always been a tried and true technique in Vocational Education.

Your Board of Directors feels strongly about the continuation of this partnership and believes that the Jimmy Johnson Memorial Vocational Education Fund is a great way for the HBA to support the Career Center and Forsyth Technical Community College in their efforts to train and educate future professionals in our field.
